Designing a product family around purpose

The GrandCHEF Spice Mills collection was developed around a simple principle: different spices require different grinding solutions. Instead of applying a single mechanism across the entire range, each mill was engineered specifically for its intended ingredient while sharing one coherent design language. This approach combines dedicated functionality with the clarity of a unified product family.

The collection includes mills for pepper, salt, chilli, dried herbs, spices and nutmeg, each equipped with a grinding mechanism optimised for its specific purpose. Ceramic mechanisms ensure precise grinding for pepper and salt, while stainless steel solutions were developed for chilli and other harder ingredients. A transparent chamber reveals the contents, colour accents simplify identification, and an integrated cap captures spice residue, allowing the mills to be placed on any surface without leaving a mess.

Rather than differentiating the products through styling alone, the project focused on creating a consistent visual identity where function defines form. Balanced proportions, intuitive ergonomics and carefully refined details establish a timeless design language that naturally extends across the entire collection.

More than a collection of spice mills, GrandCHEF demonstrates how thoughtful product architecture can create a coherent family of specialised tools without compromising simplicity or usability.
